The winery is situated at 20 kilometres from Shanghai, one of the Chinese provinces with the highest economic growth and consolidation, bearing in mind that forty percent of Chinese citizens live in the metropolitan nucleus of a large city.
To be exact, the Shanghai Félix Solís Winery Co. Ltd. is located in the city of Huangdu in Jiading District, in a commercial area which is growing at an astonishing rate, as is the case in the country as a whole.
Our establishment in China is in response to a medium and long-term strategy. Today only 0.4 litres of wine are consumed per inhabitant per year, ninety percent of which refers to local wines many of which are prepared using cereals, mainly rice.
The great hope for the future is focused on home consumption which, although still small, is slowly growing. The total wine consumption in China, again bearing in mind that ninety percent corresponds to local produce, was 550 million litres in 2006.
We have not dismissed the possibility of preparing wines using grapes from local suppliers in the near future as China is located in the same meridian as the main production areas in the world. The most popular variety of grape is the prestigious Cabernet Sauvignon.
However, the figure of a grape supplier as understood in Mediterranean countries does not exist, due to the fact that the vines planted a few years ago belong to the wineries themselves.
