Pagos del Rey DOC Rioja is located in the region known as Rioja Alta near the Ebro river in the municipal district of Fuenmayor and at only 10 kilometres from Logroño. Fuenmayor has the typical Mediterranean and continental climate of Ebro valley.
Although the town has little more than 2,000 inhabitants, it boasts one of the greatest winegrowing traditions in La Rioja. Not in vain was it chosen in April 1787 for the headquarters of the
Real Junta de Cosecheros de La Rioja (the Royal Council of Harvesters of La Rioja).
The region of Fuenmayor registers higher rainfall than the Rioja Baja, with colder winters and moderately hot summers. Nearly 25,000 of the 57,000 hectares of vineyards covered by DOC Rioja are located in this area.
The privileged location of the winery gives access to the red varieties Tempranillo (the most common), Graciano, Garnacha and Mazuelo; and the whites Viura and Malvasía.
This winegrowing region - the unquestioned leader in Spanish quality wines – nestles in the Ebro valley. The north is limited by the Sierra de Cantabria and the south by the Sierra de la Demanda and the resulting conditions create a very privileged environment for growing vines.
The 57,000 hectares of vineyards which currently comprise DOC Rioja are distributed between the autonomous communities of La Rioja, Navarre and the Basque Country. Its average yearly yield is approximately 250 million litres, of which 85% refers to red wine and the rest to white and rosé.
Although it is a relatively small area, the region of La Rioja has been divided into three sub-areas: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. The varying climates and soil properties of the same affect the development of the wines, resulting in distinctive characteristics which are ingrained in the special nature of our wines.
